What causes cellulite?

Between the skin and muscle, there lies a layer of fat cells. Running through these fat cells are fibrous, vertical cords that connect the muscle to the skin. As skin becomes more lax and fat cells accumulate, bulging and pushing upward, the cords continue to pull downward. These bands tighten and pull the skin down toward the muscle, creating dimpled, uneven skin. This is what we know as cellulite.

Qwo is a cutting-edge injectable treatment that is designed to target these vertical cords, also known as septae, and dissolve them.

What is Qwo?

Qwo (rhymes with flow) is the first and only FDA-approved injectable to treat cellulite that appears in the buttocks. This major advancement in treating cellulite is completely noninvasive, representing a major step forward in treatment.

Qwo is formulated from the enzyme CCH (Collagenase Clostridium Histolyticum). This enzyme destroys cellulite-building collagen, the protein that builds the fibrous connecting cords that are pulling the skin downward and causing the cellulite dimples. Qwo is designed to dissolve and release the cords and help redistribute fat cells. Qwo also stimulates the growth of new collagen which generates fresh new cells, providing smoother, firmer skin.

The end result, once the cords have been dissolved and the tugging on the skin is released, is the disappearance of the cellulite dimple. What is left is smooth, dimple-free skin that will become more firm and tight as the collagen rebuilding process goes forward.

What can I expect during a Qwo procedure?

Qwo is injected into the buttocks in specific, targeted areas. Before the injection process begins, we will select these targeted treatment areas. You will be asked to stand with your feet apart and your body fully relaxed. Each dimple selected for treatment will be marked with a dot and circled on your skin. A maximum of 6-12 dimples per buttock can be addressed during each treatment period.

We will ask you to lie face down. Qwo will then be injected into the fat of each circled area by Dr. Beale or one of his specialists. After the injections are complete, you will remain lying down for another five minutes. This allows Qwo to take full effect.

The procedure takes about fifteen minutes, and there are a total of three treatments done over a month and a half to complete the process.

FAQ

When will I see the results and how long will they last?

You may see an improvement by as early as three weeks after your treatment. After your first Qwo session, you will receive two more injection treatments, each three weeks apart. The final results are evaluated 28 days after the third and last injection treatment. At that point you will be able to notice smoother skin with a marked decrease in cellulite in the treated areas.

Qwo results can be expected to last for at least a year, possibly longer.

Is there a recovery period or downtime after Qwo?

There is no recovery period or downtime needed after Qwo. You can get right back to your day and usual activities after your short treatment time. You will have bruising and some soreness after your treatment. The bruising is usually more significant after the first injection treatment.

Am I a good candidate for Qwo injections?

Ideal candidates are adult women with moderate to severe cases of cellulite in the buttocks. Qwo is not indicated for men, nor for other parts of the body such as the thighs or arms. Women with clearly defined cellulite dimples are the best candidates for Qwo injections. Qwo is meant for patients who meet the following criteria:

  • Are adult women (the treatment is not indicated for men)
  • Are not allergic to collagenase or to any of the ingredients in Qwo
  • Have moderate to severe cases of cellulite in the buttocks (not for the thighs or arms)

Are Qwo injections painful?

Patients do not describe the treatment to be painful, with many reporting it is more comfortable than Botox treatments. There is no need for a numbing agent before the procedure. For a few days after your injections, you will experience a sore feeling, similar to the sensation in your muscles you get after a strong workout. This will ease in a few days.
