How does facial fat grafting work?

Through traditional liposuction techniques in other areas of the body, fat cells are harvested. The fat is then filtered to remove any blood and debris and is transferred to the fat compartments in the face to be augmented. It is injected through small cannulas or needles. Common areas to be targeted include:

  • The cheeks
  • The jowls
  • The lips
  • Below the eyes
  • The temple region

In younger patients, this can be successful as a standalone procedure—however, in older patients, fat grafting is usually combined with a face and neck lift.

Benefits of facial fat transfer

Fat transfer is a popular procedure that offers patients a number of advantages:

  • No chance of rejection of your own natural fat
  • Performed without general anesthesia
  • Sculpt certain areas of the body while rejuvenating the face
  • Minimal downtime
  • Results are visible immediately and will continue to improve
  • Easily combined with other procedures
  • Beautiful, natural-looking, long-lasting results

More people today are opting for natural alternatives in cosmetic treatment. Every year, thousands of people undergo fat transfer procedures with excellent results. Come to the cosmetic practice of Dr Evan Beale to learn more about natural fat transfer in Dallas.

Who is a good candidate for fat transfer?

A good candidate for fat transfer will have adequate fat deposits on the body for harvesting, in areas such as the abdomen, thigh, flanks, and back. This procedure may be appropriate for patients who have enough body fat to harvest and want to fill certain areas of the face to retain a youthful appearance. During your initial consultation in our Dallas office, Dr Beale will determine your candidacy for facial fat grafting or may recommend an alternate procedure to fulfill your needs.

Recovery after fat grafting

Fat grafting can be performed as a same-day procedure. Compression garments can be worn over the areas where fat was harvested, in order to keep the patient comfortable and to decrease swelling. Patients may experience slight bruising in these areas. Areas where fat is injected will be swollen for four to seven days, with trace amounts of swelling persisting longer. Some patients will have small amounts of bruising that last a week or so. Normal activity can resume within a few days following the procedure.

Because a predictable percentage of the grafted fat cells will not survive the first couple of months, a liberal supply of fat is transferred to the face. Therefore, the final, long-term results are not fully realized until two to three months.
