Excess skin and fat around the abdomen are extremely common problems for both men and women. For many people, it can seem like no amount of dieting and exercise is enough to achieve the tighter, more toned midsection they desire. If you’re looking to be rid of the loose skin on your stomach and flanks, achieve a slimmer figure, and increase your self-confidence, an extended tummy tuck could be exactly what you need.

What Is an Extended Tummy Tuck?

An extended tummy tuck is a surgical cosmetic procedure used to reduce excess skin and fat around the stomach and flanks. The surgery often involves tightening or repairing muscles in the abdominal area, as well. An extended tummy tuck is very similar to a traditional tummy tuck; the main difference is the inclusion of the flanks in the procedure.

How Is an Extended Tummy Tuck Performed?

During an extended tummy tuck, Dr Beale makes an incision above the pubic hairline that wraps around to the lower back. The surgery is then performed by removing excess skin and fat and, if necessary, using sutures to tighten or repair abdominal muscles. Additionally, the belly button is removed and reattached in its new position.

Dr Beale did an amazing job on my tummy tuck and breast reduction/lift. I could not be happier. Dr Beale, Blake, Dawn & Heather are a great team who made me feel very comfortable from the very first visit!

What Should I Expect During the Surgery?

The process of undergoing an extended tummy tuck will start with a consultation with Dr Beale. The doctor will discuss the surgery with you to help you decide if it’s the ideal choice. He’ll also evaluate your aesthetic goals and work with you to create a custom-tailored treatment plan that satisfies your unique needs.

An extended tummy tuck is usually performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. Once you’re under anesthesia, Dr Beale will begin by making the incision in your lower abdominal area. He will then begin removing excess skin and tightening muscles per your treatment plan. Liposuction may also be used to remove pockets of excess fat, and your belly button will be repositioned. Next, the doctor will close your incision with sutures and apply bandages to your abdominal area. On average, an extended tummy tuck takes between two and five hours to complete.

How Long Is the Recovery Time?

You’ll be able to return home within a few hours of your extended tummy tuck, but someone else will need to drive you. After the surgery, you’ll need to wear a compression garment for several weeks, and it may be about two weeks before you can return to your normal routine. Additionally, you’ll need to avoid strenuous physical activity for four to six weeks.
