For patients looking to bring back youthful fullness to their faces, dermal fillers offer a quick and non-surgical option. Fillers consist of injectable materials including hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxyapatite, and polylactic acid and are know by brand names including Juvéderm®, Radiesse®, Sculptra®, Restylane® and Belotero. Using very small needles, these substances are injected just below the skin in order to cosmetically enhance the area. The procedure fills in hollows, refills creases and effaces wrinkles. The areas that are most frequently enhanced using fillers are the nasolabial folds, down-turned corners of the mouth, thinned-out lips and hollows below the eyes. Fillers produce noticeable results in these areas, and offer patients a great option for facial rejuvenation; however, they are temporary, with results lasting six to eighteen months depending on the filler. Also, severe age-related deformities usually require surgical intervention for adequate correction.
Rarely, bruising can occur related at the injection site, but can be minimized by avoiding blood-thinning medications. Ice can be used during and after the procedure to keep patients comfortable and to minimize swelling. Numbing medication may be injected to numb certain areas of the face, and some fillers have this medication already mixed in. Overall, patients report the discomfort associated with fillers is minimal and the recovery is quick.
