Mastopexy (Lift)

Changes in a woman’s life can lead to sagging and deflation of the breasts – changes such as pregnancy and breastfeeding or simply the natural aging process. A breast lift (mastopexy) can lift the breasts to a higher place on the chest and restore a rounded, youthful, and symmetrical shape.

A breast lift will not increase the size of your breasts. However, if you would like larger breasts as well, you can opt for a combination breast lift/breast augmentation. Find out about breast augmentation.

If your breasts are heavy and cause back and neck pain, a breast reduction might be the best procedure for you. This surgery includes a breast lift while also reducing the size of large breasts. Find out about breast reduction.

Dr. Beale will examine you during your consultation and ask you a number of questions about what you dislike about the size and shape of your breasts. He will then discuss the different options with you in detail so that you know what to expect from your surgery. He has many years of experience providing successful breast lifts for his patients. He approaches every patient as an individual and creates a surgical plan that is customized to your needs, goals, and anatomy.

If you plan to become pregnant, we recommend that you postpone your breast lift, as pregnancy and breastfeeding may cause sagging of the breasts again.

The Breast Lift Procedure

In a breast lift, the extra skin and tissue at the lower portion of the breast is removed, and the remaining breast tissue is reshaped in order to raise the overall breast mound. The nipple is returned to its ideal central location above the breast fold.

The surgery is performed through incisions around the nipple (areola), and an incision running vertically from the bottom of the nipple to the crease under the breast. Incisions across the breast fold are sometimes required as well. Dr. Beale will take care to keep scarring to a minimum while also providing you with your desired outcome.

The surgery is performed in a hospital or surgery center under general anesthesia and is completed within two to three hours. You may go home within a few hours of your procedure.

Recovery from a Breast Lift

Most sutures used in a breast lift are placed below the skin so that they dissolve on their own and do not have to be removed. We provide you with a surgical bra for comfort and support during your recovery period.

You should limit activity for 48 hours to reduce any discomfort, and we will give you medications to control any pain you experience. Occasionally, drains are placed below the skin to capture fluids. These are removed the morning after your surgery.

You may shower the next morning, and you can resume normal activities within a few days. You should avoid strenuous activities, especially certain chest exercises, for a few weeks.

Some bruising and swelling are to be expected, but these will subside gradually in the weeks following your breast lift. We will ask you to be careful during sleep and will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions. You will see Dr. Beale for follow-up examinations to make sure you are healing well and that you are happy with your results.

Call us for an appointment to discuss how a breast lift can return your breasts to their youthful placement.
