Frequently Asked Questions About Cosmetic Procedures
What is the difference between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery?
Cosmetic procedures are for improving the aesthetics of bodily structures, and they’re typically not covered by insurance policies.
Reconstructive surgery is performed to restore form and function to many structures of the body, and it’s typically used to repair structures that have been affected by congenital defects, tumors, trauma, diseases, developmental abnormalities, infection, and past surgeries. Because it’s considered a medical treatment, reconstructive surgery is typically covered by medical insurance.
Oftentimes, reconstructive procedures can be performed to help restore a normal appearance to a bodily structure.
What is the recovery from a reconstructive and cosmetic procedure like?
The recovery from a reconstructive or cosmetic procedure will all depend on the type of surgery and the extent of correction. If the procedure was performed on an outpatient basis, the patient will be able to go home the same day as their procedure. Oftentimes, a family member, trusted friend, or caretaker should help the patient during the first 24 hours of their recovery. Patients will be prescribed pain medication to help with any discomfort. Dr. Beale will work with each patient to make sure they have a detailed recovery plan in place, and he will let each patient know when it’s okay for them to return to work or their daily activities.
Although it’s highly recommended that patients refrain from strenuous activity during the first few weeks of their recovery, patients are also encouraged to do some light walking to help with circulation. Depending on the reconstructive or cosmetic procedure, patients might have to wear drains or compression garments to help with healing.
Because they don’t require any incisions or sutures, non-surgical procedures typically do not require any downtime or recovery.
Where will my procedure be performed?
Your procedure will be performed in Dr. Beale’s state-of-the-art medical office, or any of his facilities in the Medical City Dallas Hospital, Baylor University Medical Center, Baylor Medical Center at Uptown, Baylor Surgicare at North Dallas, or the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. Nonsurgical and noninvasive procedures can be performed in the comfort of Dr. Beale’s medical office, while surgical procedures will be performed in a hospital.
Who is an ideal candidate for a procedure?
The ideal candidate for a reconstructive or cosmetic procedure is someone who:
- Is relatively close to their ideal weight
- Doesn’t smoke, or is willing to quit nicotine 3 weeks before their procedure
- Is relatively healthy, meaning they don’t have any cardiovascular diseases or any major diseases that affect their organs
- Has a strong network of family, friends, or caretakers that can help assist them during their recovery
- Is emotionally healthy and has reasonable expectations for what a cosmetic procedure can do
- Is not pregnant
Before any procedure, you will have a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Beale to assess your medical history. You must be ready to discuss your complete medical history and any medications that you might be taking with Dr. Beale.
Are there financing options available for my reconstructive and cosmetic procedure?
Our practice works with most insurance companies, and we offer a number of financing options for cosmetic procedures. We accept financing through Care Credit, Prosper Healthcare Lending, and MedicalFinancing.com, and we also accept payments in the form of cash, check, or credit card.
We’ll review your insurance coverage during your consultation.
Will my insurance company pay for my cosmetic procedure?
The main goal of a cosmetic procedure is to improve the aesthetic appearance of a specific part of your body. Most cosmetic procedures are elective, so insurance won’t cover your procedure; however, some cosmetic procedures can be covered by insurance if they’re treating a condition. For example, your blepharoplasty might be covered by insurance if your eyelids are sagging enough to obscure your vision. In addition, if your nasal structures are flawed enough to compromise your breathing, your functional rhinoplasty might be covered by insurance.
For women who suffer from back pain and other health problems thanks to overly-large breasts, a breast reduction might be covered by health insurance.
Most of the time, reconstructive surgery is covered by health insurance, but this will vary policy by policy. Revisions to fix previous cosmetic procedures are not covered by health insurance.
Will I look natural after my cosmetic procedure?
Whether it’s for a major surgery like a facelift or dermal fillers, the key to a superior cosmetic surgery practice is the ability to create natural, balanced results. The media likes to highlight the worst cases of cosmetic procedures, but in truth, the very best results are the ones that are inconspicuous. That means superior outcomes not only look natural, but perfectly proportional to the patient’s unique characteristics. Experienced, board-certified surgeons like Dr. Beale strive to create natural results when performing cosmetic procedures that don’t make patients look different; instead, they enhance patients' figures and faces with beautiful, long-lasting results.
